A commonly asked question is, “Why Two Urns?” The B&B’s name came from the motif of double urns: in the rooftop Arts and Craft concrete urns of this 1912 brownstone and the original stained glass urns on the second floor front window. Kapra had a guest tell her that the urns were most likely a classical influence still lingering from Chicago’s 1893 Columbian Exposition 20 years later. Kapra thinks there was maybe a closeout on classicism in 1912, but for whatever reason there were many urns imbedded in the facade of what originally was 1239 N. Holt Street.
When we restored the facade, Miguel found two stained glass windows with similar urn motifs and they now grace the storefront breakfast room; when we have the “fern” urns in the storefront windows we can boast 4 pairs of urns.
